The Vicente was a Cape Verdean RoRo - cargo and passenger ship that sank on January 8, 2015 during a bad weather. At least twelve passengers and crew members were killed.

history

The ship was built in 1965 by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft in Flensburg for the Danish shipping company Nordisk Færgefart in Faaborg. On April 12, 1965, the ship with hull number 608 under the name Sydfyn was launched . On August 31st of the same year it was handed over to its client and soon after it was put into operation on the route between Gelting and Faaborg. After the ship was temporarily chartered to the shipping company OP-Linien in 1967, which used it on the Kastrup line to Malmö, the Sydfyn served again on the Gelting-Faaborg line, where it was due to the increasing number of passengers due to the larger one in 1976 Ship Gelting was replaced.

On April 11, 1976, the Yugoslav shipping company Jadranska Linijska Plovidba (Jadrolinija) took over the ship in Rijeka. Under the new name of Vis , the ferry sailed the Split-Hvar-Vis route. after a transfer of ownership to the company Javno Poduzere (Jadrolinija) in Rijeka in 1991, the ship initially continued to serve on the original line, from summer 2000 then between Split, Hvar and Vela Luka and from August 2004 between Dubrovnik and Sobra. In March 2011, the Tuninha Transporte Maritimo shipping company from Mindelo on Cape Verde acquired the ship and renamed it Vicente . The new route was the Mindelo to Porto Nova route.

On January 8, 2015, the ferry with 22 passengers, four crew members as well as vehicles and containers on board was on a journey from Prai on the Cape Verde main island of Santiago to the port of São Filipe on the island of Fogo, in front of which the ship got into a bad weather area. The Vis sank about three nautical miles from the island . 14 people were rescued, twelve people died or later went missing.
