Victor Brochard

Victor Brochard (born June 29, 1848 in Quesnoy-sur-Deûle , Département Nord , † November 25, 1907 in Paris ) was a French philosopher and historian of philosophy .

After attending the Lycée in Lille , he began his studies in 1868 at the École normal supérieure . In 1872 he was appointed agregé de philosophie and philosophy teacher at the Lycée von Pau , 1875 at the Lycée von Douai , 1876 at the Lycée von Nancy , 1879 at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris (1879).

In 1879 he received his doctorate with a Latin dissertation De assensione stoïci quid senserunt ( What the Stoics Thought About Consent ) and a French dissertation De l ' Erreur .

In 1884 Brochard took part in the competition for the Prix Victor Cousin , which was advertised for a treatise on ancient skepticism . Brochard published his treatise on the Greek skeptics in 1887 under the title Les Skeptiques grecs . It was welcomed by Friedrich Nietzsche and used intensively.

Brochard was maître de conférences at the École normal supérieure and professor of the history of philosophy at the Sorbonne . In 1900 he was elected a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques .

Brochard has worked in the field of modern philosophy in particular on moral philosophy as well as in the field of ancient philosophy on Stoa, Epicurus , ancient skepticism and Plato .
