Víctor Hugo Cárdenas Conde (born June 4, 1951 in the province of Ingavi ) is a Bolivian politician . He belongs to the indigenous people of the Aymara and served from August 1993 to August 1997 under President Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada as Vice President of the Bolivian state. As this he was the first member of an indigenous ethnic group to hold the office. His father's indigenous surname was Choquehuanca, but the latter had his name changed to his wife's Spanish name in order to be able to attend university . Cárdenas himself studied linguistics .

Political career

During his vice-presidency he belonged to the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario party , but is now a member of Unidad Cívica Solidaridad . He also ran for this party in the presidential elections in Bolivia in 2019 , but only got 25,283 or 0.41% of the vote, making it eighth of a total of nine candidates.

A few days before the election, he spoke out in favor of postponing the elections due to the unrest in the country. Humberto Peinado, an evangelical pastor and anti-abortion candidate, ran as his vice-presidential candidate . Cárdenas was one of two evangelical candidates in the election, along with the South Korean doctor Chi Hyun Chung . Both were compared with the President of Brazil , Jair Bolsonaro , in the course of the election . Cárdenas spoke out against feminism and rights for homosexuals and suggested that women should be given more weapons to prevent domestic violence . In addition, he stated that the first official act in the event of an election victory would be to abolish the battle cry of the armed forces of Bolivia " Patria o muerte (in German: home or death) ", as this was increasingly pushed by President Evo Morales . In the course of the elections, Cárdenas also spoke of the attacks he feared on the political opposition , as is the case in Venezuela . He rejected the clock reform planned by Morales in 2014 (arrangement of the digits on the dials in an anti- clockwise direction , as an expression of decolonization ) and described the proposal as ridiculous.

Cárdenas is married to Lidia Catari.
