Political career

Chung achieved national fame in August 2019 when he applied as a candidate for the right-wing Partido Demócrata Cristiano against incumbent Evo Morales in the course of the 2019 presidential elections in Bolivia . Originally, the party wanted to send former President Jaime Paz Zamora into the race. However, the latter withdrew his application. As motivation for his application, he cited the incompetence of the incumbent government, the increasing centralism in Bolivia and the fear of a transformation of Bolivia into a communist system like in North Korea . Chung was the second evangelical candidate in the running for the presidency alongside former vice president Víctor Hugo Cárdenas . Paola Barriga applied as his vice presidential candidate.

His politics are strongly influenced by religion. In addition, Chung rejects the ideology of feminism and views homosexuality and more rights for the LGBT community as critical. In the run-up to the election, his target group was described as rural and religious. Approval of Chung's policy was expected, especially among members of Protestant churches . He is considered a supporter of the free market economy and federalism and describes himself as a Christian capitalist . Chung wants Bolivia to be called the Israel of South America . He also used the flag of Israel in addition to the flag of Bolivia when campaigning .

Because of his political program, he is also known as Bolivia's Jair Bolsonaro . He is also compared to the former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori , whose family came from Japan . Most of his followers are Dr. Called chi .

His strong performance in the elections, where he won almost 9% of the vote and third place behind President Evo Morales and former President Carlos Mesa , according to the official election results , was seen as a surprise success.

Chung is believed to be the first person of Korean descent to run for president in a country outside of Korea .
