Victor Mauvais

Félix-Victor Mauvais , also Victor Mauvais (born March 7, 1809 in Maîche , Doubs department , † March 22, 1854 in Paris ) was a French astronomer and from 1848 to 1849 a member of the French National Assembly .

Life

Mauvais studied at the École polytechnique in Paris and in Besançon , among others . Because of his interest in the natural sciences and especially astronomy, he received a position at the Paris Observatory in 1836 on the recommendation of François Arago . From 1843 to 1854 he worked in the Bureau des Longitudes associated with the observatory , where he worked on meteorology . Mauvais discovered four comets . In 1843 he received the Lalande Prize of the Académie des sciences for the discovery of comet C / 1843 J1 and was admitted to the Academy as a full member on November 20 of the same year. In May 1848 he became an associate member of the Royal Astronomical Society .

From April 23, 1848 to May 26, 1849 he represented the Doubs department in the French National Assembly in the left group.

In the course of the separation of the observatory from the Bureau des Longitudes in early 1854, Mauvais lost his job and committed suicide .
