Victor Louis Lucien, baron d'Urbal (born November 15, 1858 in Sarreguemines , † January 29, 1943 in Paris ) was a French officer, most recently Général de division .

Life

D'Urbal was born to Othon Henry, baron d'Urbal. He entered the Saint-Cyr Military School in 1876 and, after graduating, went to the École d'application de cavalerie in Saumur . From 1889 to 1890 he served with the 7 e régiment de dragons in Algeria , where he gained his first combat experience. In 1906 he became commander of the 12 e régiment de dragons in Pont-à-Mousson and in 1911 the 4 e brigade de dragons , with which he went to the First World War in 1914 .

On August 25, he received the command of the 7 e division de cavalerie and already on September 30 to a newly formed provisional corps that a bit later to XXXIII. Army Corps was. On October 20, he took command of the Détachement d'Armée de Belgique , with which he took part in the Battle of the Yser and the First Battle of Flanders , and from which the 8th Army emerged in November . In April 1916 he was replaced by General Micheler and then appointed as inspector of the cavalry in the zone of the armies. In February 1917 he became inspector general of the cavalry of the reserve and the interior, which he remained until the end of the war. Put up for disposal in 1919 , he said goodbye the following year.

In addition to the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, D'Urbal was awarded several foreign orders, such as the Grand Cross of the Belgian Order of the Crown and the Grand Cross of the British Order of St. Michael and St. George . His grave is in the Paris Invalides .
