history
The city of Natchez was founded in 1716. After Natchez was sold by Spain to the United States in 1798, the Spanish officer Don José Vidal (1763-1823) asked for land west of the Mississippi River. There he was given land under the condition that a fortified fort be built. Vidal moved into the fort with his family and became the commandant of the Concord outpost .
In 1800 Napoleon I of Spain reacquired the land. In 1803 the area was sold by France to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase .
James Bowie's famous "Sandbar Fight" took place in 1827 on a sandbank near what would later become the city .
In 1870 the city was founded in the area around the old fort and named after Vidal.
