Viehwäldchen, Apfelkammer, Neuwäldchen has been a nature reserve in Mannheim since 1993 .
It has a size of 38.5 hectares and is located in the east of Mannheim, east of the federal motorway 6 . In the north runs the state border with Hesse, where the Viernheimer dune is located on both sides of the border ( protected as a natural monument in the Hessian part ). The nature reserve is part of the Upper Rhine drifting sand area , which stretches from Rastatt to Mainz, and is divided into three different areas. The Neuwäldchen in the west is a pine - robinia forest with poor grass . The Gewann apple chamber is used for agriculture; types of sandy lawns have settled on fallow land . The Viernheimer dune is remarkable, the calcareous dry sand is subject to daily temperature fluctuations of up to 50 ° C. Rare animal and plant species have adapted to these conditions, such as the silver wreath and the blue-gray Kammerschmiele and a rich fauna of ground beetles , grasshoppers and wild bees . Another inland dune in the east of the nature reserve is overgrown with a robinia forest (cattle grove). Here come Schwarzpurpurner leeks , dog chervil and leopoldia comosa before, and two rare mushrooms teats earthstar and collar-earth star .
