Viepri is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Massa Martana in the province of Perugia in Umbria .

geography

The place is about 5.5 km north of the main town Massa Martana and about 33 km southeast of the provincial and regional capital Perugia . The place is at 478  m slm and had about 150 inhabitants in 2001. In 2011 there were 157 inhabitants.

history

The place emerged as a castle after 1380, when the castle of Monte Schignano (previously Monte Ascanio ), the ruins of which are now above the present place, was destroyed. In 1392 the place submitted to Ugolino III. Trinci from the house of the Trinci from Foligno , but was soon conquered by Todi . Today the place is known for the Sagra della Polenta festival , which took place for the 22nd time in 2019.

Attractions

  • San Giovanni Battista , church in the center from the 16th century. Contains the fresco Madonna col bambino tra angeli and Decollazione di San Giovanni Battista from 1577 .
  • Santa Maria , also Santa Maria Sperandio or Sancta Maria de Vepribus , church and abbey just west of the town, which was built around 1150 by the lords of the nearby town of Castelvecchio. In 1185 the church seems to belong to the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro di Monte Martano . At the beginning of the 13th century, the church became the pieve of the now destroyed castle of Monteschignano. Contains the canvas paintings Natività della Madonna and Madonna del Rosario , both works by Andrea Polinori (1586–1648). Santa Maria di Viepri was badly damaged in the 1997 earthquake and restored until the beginning of 2018. The opening mass was held by the bishop of the Orvieto-Todi diocese , Benedetto Tuzia .
