action

Four windows dismantled the image of the “normal” family. The same excerpt from everyday life is told over and over again in four chapters from the perspectives of father, mother, son and daughter and thus reveals the isolation of each individual in the midst of the family community. The togetherness has long since degenerated into a masquerade, but the attempts of parents and children to demand the lack of closeness in strangers fail and only throw them back on themselves all the more.

background

The film is a co-production of the pure and simple film production , Film University Babelsberg and the HFF Munich .

Award

The film was awarded the Franz Hofer Prize in 2006.

Reviews

“Müller opted for long plan shots without editing (camera: Jürgen Jürges) in order to 'give each of the characters space to expand in the audience'. It would have been nice if the script had also given its characters more space. At the end there is a spark of hope and the step outside when the two siblings finally talk to each other. "

- Dietmar Kammerer: The daily newspaper

“Jürgen Jürges' camera captures all of these attempts at love in an oppressive way; with long plan sequences that take away what other films leave out, even small bumps in the shopping center, and a frame that impressively depicts the forlornness of the characters. We rarely see a figure close and frontal, the camera keeps its distance, remains in the hallway when someone has already disappeared into the bathroom, doors are often cut or a wall half hides the view. "

- Verena Friederike Hasel: The Tagesspiegel

“Together with his cameraman Jürgen Jürges, Müller breaks free from all naturalism and tells in a strictly stylized way, in long, agonizing shots. FOUR WINDOWS is a film of the half-open doors, which allow a glimpse into the secrets of everyone involved without creating voyeuristic pleasure. More to suspect than to see are outbreaks of helpless violence. "

- Ralf Schenk: Berliner Zeitung

“The director doesn't just want to depict speechlessness as a metaphor for disturbed relationships. He also does not produce meaningful, but rather insignificant dialogues that serve to avoid silence, but which are always carried by the subtext, which in turn is expressed in glances. This is undoubtedly a quality of the film. The director does not make access to his feature film debut easy. He gives too much space, for example, to observation, simply following his figures. The pictures are definitely of high quality, after all, Müller was able to win over Jürgen Jürges for the design. "
