The four-Punk term carrion beetles or four Punk term caterpillar hunter ( Dendroxena quadrimaculata ) is a beetle from the family of carrion beetles (Silphidae).
features
The beetles are 12 to 14 millimeters long and have a flat, oval body. They have a yellow-brown body color. On the outer wings there is a black spot on the pronotum and a little behind the middle. The scutellum is also black. The pronotum is colored yellow-brown laterally and towards the wings, in the middle, up to the front edge there is an extensive, black spot. The head, antennae and legs are black, the antennae and tarsi are a little lighter in color. The rare form sexmaculata has an additional black spot at the end of each wing.

Occurrence
The animals occur in Europe to the south of Scandinavia . They live mainly in oak forests at lower altitudes, they are absent in higher altitudes and in pure coniferous forests . You can find them from April to June.
Way of life
The adults hunt, unusual for carrion beetles, on the vegetation for caterpillars , the larvae of plant wasps and aphids . The females lay their eggs one by one in the ground. The larvae that hatch are black and a maximum of 20 millimeters long. They also feed predatory on insect larvae living in the ground and also on carrion . Pupation takes place in the same year, the new generation of beetles overwinters in the ground and will appear next April.
