The four-tube fountain in Sommerach

The four-tube fountain (also called Steinerner Jörg ) is a fountain system on the market square of Sommerach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The fountain forms the center of the place on the main street.

history

At the current location there was a well already in the 17th century, which ensured the water supply for the population. It was expanded in 1625 and was significantly higher than the current facility. The ascent to the tank made it possible to draw water. The old well formed the center and end point of the iron water pipe that had existed since the beginning of the 16th century .

In 1701 the fountain was given its current shape. The water tank was lowered and the four lion heads, from which the water flows, were attached. The figure of St. George fighting the dragon was also created in 1701. It was an early work by the artist Matthias Sporer , who died in 1732 in Sommerach. The vernacular calls the figure “Steinerner Jörg”.

The statue was in need of major renovation as early as 1813. The community had the figure removed and placed it in front of the Rimbacher Tor in the northwest of the village. It took almost a hundred years before plans for closing the well were available again. In 1901, the community of Sommerach commissioned the Würzburg sculptor Arthur Schlegelmünch to make a copy of the figure of St. George.

In a fundraising campaign, 420 Reichsmarks were collected for the redesign and the factory was inaugurated on July 28, 1901. In the same year the fountain was given a new wooden housing by the carpenter Michael Niedermeyer. Schlegelmünch was again commissioned to create a new well. In 1983 the fountain had to be restored. The fountain is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

description

The fountain basin is an octagonal system. A kind of pillar was created on one side by the water supply from the east. The fountain attachment, a round column with the four lion heads, stands in the center as a relief in the basin. Above rises the figure of St. George, who thrusts an iron lance into the dragon's throat. The figure is made of French limestone , the basin is made of stones from Randersacker .
