Fourth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition
The Norwegian Antarctic Expedition 1968–1969 (NorAE 1968–1969) was a research trip to the Antarctic funded by the Norwegian Polar Institute . The goals of the expedition were the mapping and geological and glaciological investigations of the Kraulberge ( Norwegian Vestfjella ) in the western Queen Maud Land .
The expedition team consisted of the geologist and expedition leader Thore Schanke Winsnes (* 1922), the geologist Audun Hjelle, the glaciologist Torbjørn Lunde, the topographer Dag Norberg, the geodesist Ola Steine and the radio operator Kåre M. Bratlien. The expedition started on August 22, 1968 at McMurdo Station , from where the participants were flown to the target area by the United States Navy . Investigations in the target area began after the Norway I base camp was established . The expedition ended on January 20, 1969 when the participants were transported back to McMurdo station.
