The Vietnamese Pheasant ( Lophura hatinhensis ) is a controversial Hühnervogel art from the family of pheasant-like , of northern Central Vietnam endemic is. The rare and endangered species was only discovered in 1964. It is regarded by some authors only as a subspecies of the Edward's pheasant . The International Ornithological Union removed this taxon from the list of valid bird species in 2012 after chicken bird experts Steve Madge and Philip McGowan determined in 2002 that the Vietnam pheasant is most likely a hybrid of the Edwardian pheasant and the silver pheasant .

description

This rather short-tailed pheasant species is very similar to the Edward's pheasant and reaches a body length between 58 and 65 cm. The rooster shows a red, featherless eye region, a white hood, partly mixed with black, and is predominantly blue-black in color. The feathers on the top show shiny blue hems and a subterminal black band. In contrast to those of the Edward's pheasant, the two central control feathers are white. The legs are crimson.

The plumage of the hen is predominantly cool gray-brown with a warmer tone on the wings and a black-brown joint with a brown central pair of control feathers.

voice

The alarm call is described as a muffled but hard, strung puk , similar to that of the Edward's pheasant.

Distribution and existence

The Vietnam pheasant is endemic to central Vietnam, where it was only discovered in 1964. The type specimen was a rooster, a second was not collected until 1974. For a long time nothing else was known about the species until it was rediscovered in the late 1980s. Current evidence is available from the provinces of Ha Tinh and Quang Binh , most of them from the Ke-Go nature reserve . In 1994 another occurrence was discovered in the lowlands of the Khe Net , the continued existence of which appears doubtful due to the increasing use of the forest. The world population of the Vietnam pheasant is estimated at less than 2500 animals. Since the habitats are threatened by large-scale clearing for land use through rice cultivation, the species is considered endangered by the IUCN . The Vietnam pheasant is also threatened by hunting and illegal logging in the already protected areas.

Way of life

The Vietnam pheasant is found in primary and secondary forests in the plains and hill country. It apparently prefers forests with a dense canopy, but also appears to occur in habitats with logging and in dense bank vegetation.
