Vievis (German, 18th century: Wewien ) is a town and center of the rural authority of the same name in the municipality of Elektrėnai in southeast Lithuania , located in a wooded area on Lake Vievis of the same name . It has around 5,100 inhabitants and is now considered a suburb of Vilnius due to its convenient location on the expressway and the railway line between Vilnius and Kaunas and is characterized by lively investment and construction activity. The Orthodox Church on the eastern outskirts is striking.
history
The first known mention of the place comes from the year 1539.
In 1931 the Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne was built in Vievis . The city charter was granted in 1950.
The local high school (Vievio gimnazija) has maintained a student exchange with the Stephan-Ludwig-Jacobi-Realschule in Kalletal-Hohenhausen since 1991 through the financial support of the “West-Eastern Encounters” foundation . The newly founded Kalletal Community School has been continuing the student exchange since 2015. The German-Lithuanian visits will henceforth take place every two years.
