The Vigilant is an ocean-going patrol boat ( Offshore Patrol Vessel , OPV) and was until 2014 the flagship of the Coast Guard of Mauritius .
In terms of size and range of uses , the Vigilant could also be classified as a corvette . The designation and classification as OPV goes back to the conceptual design as a light and versatile ship and the fact that Mauritius officially has no military.
The design comes from Polar Design Associates Ltd. (Naval Architects & Marine Engineers) , the Vigilant was built under the supervision of a team from the Western Canada Marine Group (WCMG) in the Chilean shipyard ASMAR in Talcahuano .
Shortly after commissioning, defects in the drive became noticeable. These were remedied at the end of the 1990s by an Indian shipyard, whereby the maximum speed was reduced to 18 knots.
Duties and equipment
The Vigilant is primarily used for surveillance as well as search and rescue tasks in the waters around Mauritius. It is equipped with extensive rescue equipment and a helicopter for this purpose.
