biography

Vijay Rupani was born in what was then Burma, where his father Ramniklal Rupani was a grain trader. His family belongs to the Jain community and the Bania merchant caste . A few months after his birth, the family moved to India due to the political instability in Burma and Vijay Rupani then grew up in Rajkot ( Gujarat ). While still at school he was active in the Hindu cadre organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its youth organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Vijay Rupani studied after high school at Dharmendrasinhji arts college and earned a degree the degree of BA and after some media reports, a degree in law ( LLB ) at the Saurashtra University , Rajkot.

Politically, he was active in the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Jana Sangh ("Jan Sangh"), the forerunner of today's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was an opposition member for a long time during the state of emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in India from 1975 to 1977 imprisoned.

After the establishment of the BJP in 1980, he joined this party and was first elected to an office in 1987, that of a city council in Rajkot. Rupani was mayor of the city from 1996 to 1997. Between 2006 and 2012 he was a member of the Rajya Sabha , the “house of states” of the Indian parliament, and in this function was active in various parliamentary committees. During this time he was also active in the party organization of the BJP in the Saurashtra - Kachchh region .

After the Gujaratic BJP MP Vajubhai Vala was appointed governor of the state of Karnataka , Rupani won the vacant constituency 69-Rajkot West in a by-election on October 19, 2014 with a large majority against the competing Congress Party candidate and then moved into parliament of the state. It was the same constituency that incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi won in 2002 before his election as Chief Minister of Gujarat. In the government of Chief Minister Anandiben Patel , who has been in office since May 2014 , Rupani was Minister for Transport after his election to parliament.

At the beginning of August 2016, the incumbent Chief Minister Anandiben Patel (BJP) submitted her resignation. She officially justified this with her age of almost 75 years. Afterwards there were discussions and speculations about her successor. The BJP party committees did not select their protégé Nitin Patel, the previous Minister for Water Resources and Urban Development in Gujarat, as her successor, but Vijay Rupani, who was elected to parliament for the first time in 2014. Nitin Patel received the post of Deputy Chief Minister.

Vijay Rupani is considered a close confidante of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP party president Amit Shah , both of whom are also Gujaratis.
