Viking is a town in Beaver County in the Central Alberta region in the Canadian province of Alberta . Viking has 1,083 inhabitants (as of 2017). Acting Mayor is Jason Ritchie.

Viking is located approximately 120 kilometers east of Edmonton in southern Canada. The city is named for the Viking Formation, a rock containing oil shale .
history
Viking was founded in 1909 by Scandinavian immigrants and made a city in 1952. The well-known Sutter family comes from Viking, and nine ice hockey players made it into the National Hockey League . On July 7, 2005, the city's ice rink was damaged by fire. The new "Viking Carena Complex" was inaugurated on August 17, 2007. In 2009 the city celebrated its centenary.
