Viktor Kraemer senior (also Victor August Kraemer , born June 1, 1840 in Rudersberg , † November 4, 1911 in Heilbronn ) was a publisher in Heilbronn.

Life

Kraemer came from a large milling family. Like several of his sisters, he wanted to emigrate to America at a young age, but then decided at the last minute to do a commercial apprenticeship in the company of a brother-in-law in Stuttgart . In 1870 he came to Heilbronn. In the 19th century, developing into one of the most important industrial cities in the southwest, he founded the resin product factory Kraemer & Flammer together with his brother-in-law Ernst Wilhelm Flammer senior . In 1876 he married Lina Frank, the daughter of a brewery owner. In 1885 Kraemer left the resin product factory. This later became known nationwide as Flammer Seifenwerke with soap and washing powder.

In 1885 Kraemer initially planned to take over the Stuttgart company of another brother-in-law who had died in an accident, but then stayed in Heilbronn and became a partner in the printing company founded by Carl Schell , which had been publishing the Neckar newspaper since 1861 . Kraemer devoted himself there in particular to the publishing business. In 1887 Kraemer and Schell acquired the Heilbronner General-Anzeiger . In 1898 Kraemer acquired the entire publishing house for just under one million marks. As early as 1899 he had the publishing house expanded significantly. In 1901 he also acquired the Weinsberger Zeitung .

In 1902 Kraemer, who belonged to the German party , appointed Ernst Jäckh , who was only 27 years old, to be editor-in-chief of the Neckar newspaper. The newspaper described itself as "party-free", but advocated national social and liberal-democratic goals. With editor-in-chief Jäckh, Kraemer redesigned the newspaper into a nationally respected, political daily newspaper, the circulation of which grew from 14,000 to 20,000 copies from 1902 to 1912. Kraemer was also one of the largest lenders for the construction of the first Heilbronn city theater from 1911 to 1913 .

Viktor Kraemer was married to Lina, geb. Frank (1857–1914), with whom he had seven children. In 1880 he acquired a property with 13 rooms and 21 ares of garden land in Bismarckstraße 22 as a family home. In 1890 he had the house equipped with an electric bell, in 1900 with a telephone connection and in 1905 with electric lighting.

After Kraemer suffered a stroke in 1902, his son of the same name Viktor Kraemer junior (1881-1937) joined the management team. After the death of the elder Viktor Kraemer in 1911, his widow Lina was also a member of the management team until her accidental death in 1914.

Appreciation

In 1985 the city of Heilbronn named Kraemerstraße after Viktor Kraemer senior and his son, the blind scholar Rudolf Kraemer (1885–1945).
