Viktor Merz

Victor Merz (born December 13, 1839 in Odessa , † May 25, 1904 in Lausanne , often also Viktor Merz ) was a Swiss chemist and university professor .

biography

Victor Merz was born to Swiss parents. From 1952 he attended an industrial school in Zurich and from 1857 to 1860 studied chemistry at the Zurich Polytechnic and at the University of Zurich . In 1861 and 1862 he moved to Munich to join Justus von Liebig and, on his return in 1864, received his doctorate from Georg Städeler with studies on titanium, silicon and boron . His habilitation followed in 1866. From 1870 to 1893 he held a chair for chemistry at the University of Zurich. Merz did research in many areas, including the chemistry of aromatics .
