Viktor Steska

Viktor Steska (born January 1, 1868 in Ljubljana (Laibach), † January 1, 1946 there ) was a Slovenian art historian and Roman Catholic clergyman .

Life

After attending grammar school and studying theology in Ljubljana, Viktor Steska was ordained a priest in 1891 . He was then chaplain in Kočevje (Gottschee) until 1896 and in Ljubljana until 1898. From 1899 to 1906 Steska was the episcopal secretary and from 1906 to 1918 director of the episcopal chancellery in the diocese of Ljubljana . After that he worked until his retirement in 1926 as a cultural advisor to the Slovenian state government.

Viktor Steska was the founder of the Christian Art Association Društvo za krščansko umetnost and honorary chairman of the Art History Society Slovensko umetnostnozgodovinsko društvo (SUZD).

Services

Steska published his work mainly in the magazines Carniola , Cerkveni glasbenik , Dom in svet , Izvestje Društva za krščansko umetnost and Mladika . He covered a broad spectrum of historical studies : from literary and music history to archeology and art history, which was his main field of activity , supported by the vicar general of the Ljubljana diocese Janez Fils . His book Slovenska umetnost , published in 1927, received particular attention . I. del Slikarstvo , which deals with painters from the Middle Ages to the modern age who worked on the Slovenian territory.
