Vilcún municipality |
Vilcún is a town and municipality in southern Chile and is located about 45 km east of Temuco in the Región de la Araucanía . Vilcún has 22,499 inhabitants (2012). The name means in the language of the Mapuche wall lizard , which described the initially elongated location of the settlement area. Cherquenco , San Patricio , General López and Cajón also belong to the municipality .
history
The settlement or colonization of the region by European immigrants began as early as the 19th century. The families Rawson Makaya, Carlos Keller, Ernesto Behnke Vergara and Pablo Lüer Metzner were particularly involved in expanding the settlement structure. German emigrants in particular came to the region under the influence of Vicente Pérez Rosales. Finally, Vilcún was officially founded on October 18, 1926, but was initially written as Vircún .
In 1911 the new town received a rail connection when the existing line from Cajón was extended to the east.
population
11,392 men and 11,099 women (including children; as of 2002) make up the municipality's inhabitants. Around 40 percent (= 9,024) live in urban areas and 60 percent (= 13,467) in rural areas. The increase within ten years (based on the 1992 census) was around 7.7 percent (= 1,604) people.
tourism
The municipality is located west of the Llaima volcano and the Conguillío National Park . The Refugio Llaima and a small ski area are also located there.
