Vilijampolė is a district in Kaunas , in the second largest city in Lithuania .

history

The Vilijampolė Jewish Cemetery was established in the 18th century . The Vilijampolė yeshiva existed from 1882 to 1941 . In 1932 a Catholic church was built and in 1936 the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (now the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences ).

In 1939 the metal processing company "Grandis" (now AB Atrama) was established. In 1951 it was established as a branch in Vilijampolė of the Kauno audiniai fabric factory in Soviet Lithuania . In 1956 it became an independent company ('Siebert- Silk- Combine' ), now AB Šilkas . In 1982 there were 3,100 employees.

The winter port of Kaunas , one of four inland ports in Kaunas, is located on the left (western) bank of the River Nemunas (German Memel). It was built in the Soviet era.
