Villány (wine region)
Villány (formerly Villány-Siklós ) [ ˈvilːaːɲ ˈʃikloːʃ ] is Hungary's southernmost wine-growing region (→ Viticulture in Hungary ). Mainly red wines grow here . Only wines from the Villány area that meet the strict criteria of the relevant regulations of origin are allowed to carry the Villány name on the bottle.
While in the past mainly the red grape varieties Blaufränkischer as well as Oporto and Kadarka were grown, today it is increasingly the international varieties Cabernet and Merlot . The white wines are Chardonnay and Welschriesling ("Olaszrizling"). In Villány there were the first organic premium winegrowers in Hungary who achieved all important European certifications. The Villány wine region is now the wine-growing region in Hungary with the largest proportion of organic winegrowers. The soils of the wine-growing area are loamy, sometimes also characterized by iron-containing red clay components. The mountain range between Villány and Siklós to Csarnóta does not have any watercourses. There are few sources here.
