The Villa Amalia (also known as Villa Neuhaus and popularly known as Briller Schlösschen ) is a villa in the Briller quarter in the Elberfeld-West district of Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia . The building has been registered as a monument together with the villa's coach house since 1986 in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.

description

The two-storey villa is slightly hidden in a small park made up of old beech and chestnut trees . A fountain is located outside, which is also part of the monument. The building was built in the style of historicism with elements of the neo-renaissance and is a representative of the typical country house of the second half of the 19th century. The stone facade is determined by a hexagonal tower whose verschieferte hood was originally provided yet with a lantern.

The property measures around 9,000 square meters.

history

The Berlin architects Walter Kyllmann and Adolf Heyden built the villa on Briller Straße for Albert Neuhaus from 1883 to 1884 . The name Amalia was the first name of Neuhaus' wife.

In 1976 the building was threatened with demolition, but was placed under monument protection and saved through a private initiative by Bernt Westarp. Villa Neuhaus was used as a care facility from 1980 to 1991 and was managed by Bernt Westarp.

Since August 1, 1990, it was owned by Johannes Seniorendienste e. V. , a diaconal association with around 3,300 places in over 50 institutions nationwide. The association operated a retirement home in the Villa Amalia under the name “Johanneshaus Am Brill” and offered space and care for around 90 senior citizens. In July 2012 it became known that the Johannes Seniorendienste are insolvent and will be wound up.

In June 2015 it was announced that an Aachen real estate company had acquired the villa after three years of vacancy. It is intended that a renovation should be carried out in accordance with historical monuments so that the villa can then be rented to an agency, law firm or joint practice. The extension and the chapel are to be dismantled in the short term.

The Villa Amalia was used as a filming location for the third season of the TV series Babylon Berlin at the end of 2018 .

The current plans envisage that three multi-family houses can be built on the property on a good 4800 square meters. The plans were approved and the construction project could be implemented. Due to the distance to the location of the Aachen real estate company, this will not implement the project and is hoping for a buyer for the part of the site. The project has met with criticism, however, as Briller Strasse is not ideal for living due to possible noise pollution.

The building is to be made available to one or more tenants as office space.
