The Villa Brandenstein , a villa built in 1923/1924 by the architect Hermann Frede and now a listed building, is located in the Nördliche Innenstadt district , Am Kirchtor 11, in Halle (Saale) and is the only example of Art Deco in the history of Halle's villa construction. The villa is listed in the monument register of the city of Halle under registration number 094 80076.

location

The villa built for the merchant Alfred Brandenstein is in an exposed location in terms of urban development. It forms the point de vue at the end of the Burgstrasse visual axis, where the Neuwerk and Am Kirchtor streets meet at an acute angle. Further street junctions result in a space similar to that of a square in front of the villa.

description

The prominent location prompted Hermann Frede to create a representative facade. He provided the front of the two-storey, rectangular plastered building with a high hipped roof with a lavishly sculpted pilaster architecture in limestone . A head protruding from the gable above the entrance door, animal figures in the window gables and floral and geometric reliefs characterize the architectural decoration of the villa. A small parapet in front of the hipped roof emphasizes the central axis of the facade as a kind of portico . The entrance can be reached via five steps and a terrace in front.

The limestone enclosure with vases on the gate pillars and the wrought-iron gate emphasize a majestic distance and make the villa look like a small palace. On the south side of the garden, the house expands into a round bay window. On the west side there is a rectangular porch with a balcony. The side facades as well as the garden side are - in contrast to the northern front side - kept very simple.

This design language reflects Fredes' architectural conception, which combines simple forms with individual highlights. Along with the administrative buildings also built by Frede on Maxim-Gorki-Straße, the house is the most richly furnished building in the Art Deco style in Halle.
