Life

Hermann Frede, born as the oldest of nine miners' children, received his training as an architect at the building trade school in Münster . There, the first professional success in 1904 is the winning of 2nd place in a competition for a development plan with blocks of houses.

Frede had been married to Hulda Martha Porwoll from Münster since 1909 and had three children with her. In 1910 the family moved to Halle, where they also maintained a summer house from 1927 to 1939 in the neighborhood of Gustav Weidanz at Schwuchtstraße 13a in Kröllwitz .

In Halle, Frede initially worked as a salaried architect until he set up his own office in 1912. Perhaps he was encouraged to do so by the first prize for a competition design for the administration building of the State Insurance Company Saxony - Anhalt in Merseburg, on which he had worked in 1911 as an employee of the architect Otto Boecke, which, however, was submitted and awarded under Boecke's name. Fredes first big order as a freelance architect was the so-called "Garden City on Mühlrain". For the Bauverein für Kleinwohnungen e. G. Halle conceived residential complex was built between 1913 and 1919. In the First World War he was used as a pioneer .

In the 1920s he had up to 30 employees in his office. There were settlements, u. a. built in Bergwitz , Graefenhainichen , Gröbzig , Holzweißig near Bitterfeld and Wittenberg . One of his most important projects at this time is the construction of the administration building for the Central Agricultural Cooperative , for his competition design he received the first prize of 25,000 marks among 25 competitors.

In addition to administrative buildings, his repertoire also included industrial buildings and private residential and commercial buildings.

On Black Friday 1929 , Frede lost his credit at the Lehmann bank. After that, private clients stayed away for a long time. There were also significantly fewer architectural competitions. During this time, however, the Elektrizitätswerk Sachsen-Anhalt AG commissioned a number of switching stations and substations.

In 1937 he celebrated his 25th anniversary in business. On the occasion of this anniversary, City Planning Officer Wilhelm Jost wrote in a greeting to Hermann Frede:

"You have achieved a lot and beautiful things, would you like to stay with us for a long time in your fresh work as a creator of new buildings and as a valuable employee in the city administration."

Hermann Frede was a member of the municipal administration's art advisory board. 1933/1934 he was a member of the Association of German Architects as part of the DC circuit as a member of the Professional Association of Architecture within the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts .

During the Second World War he worked as a specialist in air raid shelters.

After the end of the war, Hermann Frede took a position as lead architect in the design office of Hochbau Halle / S. on. There was little room for maneuver there; the typification of the buildings increasingly limited the possibilities of individual planning, so that he became a freelance architect again. Although this activity was also limited to rebuilding and small private contracts, he did not put his thoughts on emigration into practice. On behalf of the city of Halle, he occasionally gave lectures to architecture students and young architects.

His last assignment in 1964/1965 was a rectory for the Elisabeth Hospital in Halle. But he could no longer carry out this project.
