The Elektrizitätswerk Sachsen-Anhalt AG (short: ESAG ) is a former energy supply company (EVU), which in the first half of the 20th century belonged to one of the four leading EVUs in what was later to become the GDR .

The headquarters of the company was in central Germany in Halle an der Saale . From here, ESAG built up its supply area, which included the west of the province of Saxony and the Free State of Anhalt as well as other areas (i.e. far more than the current state of Saxony-Anhalt ).

history

The company , which was founded in 1917 by the Deutsche Continental-Gesellschaft and the Provinzialverband Sachsen , contributed significantly to the electrification of Central Germany by building up electricity generation and transmission capacities . Among other things, ESAG built the Großkayna power plant in Braunsbedra- Großkayna in 1920 .

From 1922, the empire's own electrical works were also involved in ESAG, which were also electricity suppliers for ESAG. Together with the electrical works, ESAG operated the Zschornewitz power plant, one of the first large-scale power plants in Central Germany.

The ESAG ended in 1946 after the Second World War under the SMAD through conversion to " public property " and integration into the planned economy of the GDR . The various systems (power stations, switchgear and transformer stations, lines, ...) were assigned to various state- owned companies or combines .
