Villa Spindler

According to another source, the two-storey villa was built before 1838 in the late Classicist style around 1820 . The building is covered with a gently sloping hipped roof .

The strictly symmetrical, five-axis street-side front is designed with a two-storey, three-axis central projection, which is covered by a triangular gable with ox-eye . The plainly designed white facade is equipped with square plaster structures and decor.

The building is accessed in the middle from the northern side facing the street via a single external staircase . Above this entrance is a balcony with an elaborately made wrought iron railing. On the side facing away from the street, the house is accessed from the courtyard by a two-flight external staircase, this front is laid out on three axes.

Courtyard

The courtyard has a park-like character thanks to a fountain that is around five meters in diameter. It is the remainder of a park that in the 19th century still extended to the banks of the Wupper .

The courtyard was originally framed by two separate outbuildings. The two-storey former coach house of the villa has been preserved on the western side of the property . The demolition of the eastern outbuilding created a driveway to the area behind the courtyard.

The two-storey coach house with a gently sloping hipped roof is divided in the middle by a protruding tower building. The vehicle garage was located in the basement on the right, the driveways are still visible today. The stables were in the basement on the left, two horse heads indicate the original use. The upper floor of the building was converted into an apartment for the servants of the villa. The tower building was provided with a window on the upper floor, framed with two columns.

history

The Villa Spindler, which was built before 1849, is a few years younger than the neighboring Villa Urner to the east . The building owner and architect of the villa is not documented.

Since the end of the 1830s, the villa was the seat of the Heimweberkontor Kampf & Spindler founded in Elberfeld in 1832 and the residence of its partner Christian Spindler (1801–1881). The villa was later acquired by the manufactory and fashion merchant Eduard Friedrichs. After the turn of the century, A. Himmelmann, the partner in the Himmelmann-Pothmann wine shop , lived here. In the 1920s, Erich Breitenbach, a Colonel ret. D., the house. He coined the name Villa Breitenbach for the house and had numerous relationships with the upper society of the city of Elberfeld. He was chairman of the officers' association in the Landwehr area in Elberfeld and wrote the chronicle of the Casino company in 1927 and later that of the Schützengesellschaft am Brill . The house was owned by the Reimann & Meyer vest weaving mill at that time.

Like many other buildings in the area, the villa was threatened with demolition in the 1970s. A citizens' initiative fought to keep the villa. At the beginning of 1981 there was a squatting , a street festival and a citizens' protest campaign "We form a human ring" were organized, with a human ring symbolically protecting the villa from demolition.

The building was registered with the Remise as a historical monument on December 19, 1984 under a monument number in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.

The offices of a lawyer as well as several auditors and tax consultants are located in the building today.
