The Villa Europa (also Villa Röchling ) is a neo-baroque building at Kohlweg 7 in the Saarbrücken district of Rotenbühl . The ensemble of buildings and the associated park are under monument protection.

history

The former villa of the banker Eduard Röchling, a son of Carl Röchling , was built in 1913 according to plans by the architects Karl Brugger and Rudolf Seifert on a park-like property with a small coach house. In 1927 the house was transferred to the city, which set up a children's rest home here. After the war, the villa was initially used as a retirement home. For this purpose, senior building officer Paul Seeberger had rebuilt the house between 1952 and 1954 and redesigned the main staircase. He also added an elongated, two-story building to the house. After the retirement home was closed, the ensemble of buildings stood empty for a long time. The Saarland took over the villa in 1983 and set up a Franco-German boarding school. Here, too, modifications were made to the interior.

From 2001 to 2004 the house was again vacant and was then renovated for 4.9 million euros. The house has been the administrative headquarters of the Franco-German University since 2006.

architecture

The two-storey villa with a hipped mansard roof is located in a north-south direction in a spacious park with old trees. While the front is dominated by a central projection, on the back a round opening in front of a large terrace is decisive for the facade. The coach house is an extension to the front of the villa in the northeast. The simple extension from the 1950s is located in the southwest of the old building and has two floors with a flat hipped roof . On the garden side facing south, it has a basement level with a loggia .

Current usage

In addition to the administration of the Franco-German University , the building also houses the Institut d'Etudes Françaises , the Institut de Langue Française and the Academic Advanced Training Academy Saar GmbH .

The old villa building houses 3 representative meeting rooms as well as a library and a library magazine, the offices are largely housed in the newer building.
