Herberts Villa

The Villa Herberts , also Villa Waldfrieden , (address: Hirschstrasse 12) is an architecturally significant and listed residential building in the Wuppertal residential area of Hesselnberg ( Unterbarmen ).

description

The Villa Herberts, also called "Haus Waldfrieden", is located in a park of approx. 15 hectares. Their distinctly organic shapes are characteristic.

history

The building was built from 1946 to 1949 according to designs by the architect and painter Franz Krause (1897–1979) for the Wuppertal paint manufacturer Kurt Herberts on the foundations of the previous building that was destroyed in World War II. It is considered an example of “ organic architecture ” and shows the influences of the architecture of Hans Scharoun and Hugo Häring . The construction method also corresponded to the anthroposophical ideas of Kurt Herberts, who lived here until his death in 1989.

The villa was entered on March 31, 1992 under the number 2135 in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal together with the excursion restaurant from the 1910s, which is now operated as Cafe Podest .

In 2003 parts of the film Agnes and his brothers were shot here.

From January to autumn 2006 the vacant villa was rented for the Outsides project sponsored by Red Bull , which in October 2006 resulted in a corporate street art attack by 22 international street art artists. Subsequently, also in 2006, the villa and park were acquired by the artist Tony Cragg, who lives in Wuppertal , and is now part of the ensemble of the Waldfrieden sculpture park . After extensive renovation and building technology modernization, the villa will be used for events and offices of the Cragg Foundation.
