Villem Reimann

Villem Reimann (born March 6, jul. / 19th March  1906 greg. In Pärnu , †  8. June 1992 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer . He is the father of the Estonian pianist, composer and music professor Matti Reimann .

Life

Villem Reimann completed his studies in composition with Artur Kapp in 1933 and in piano with Artur Lemba at the Tallinn Conservatory in 1936 . In 1937/38 he continued his education at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest . His teachers there included Zoltán Kodály and Leó Weiner . 1940/41 Reimann was employed in Tallinn as music editor for the Estonian newsreel Kinokroonika Eesti Stuudio .

From 1942 Reimann taught as a lecturer at the Tallinn State Conservatory, especially music theory and chamber music . From 1965 he was a professor there.

As a composer, Villem Reimann created numerous pieces for chamber orchestra and choral works. The film scores are also well-known, including the accompaniment to the early Estonian documentary Vilsandi linnuriik ("The Birds of Vilsandi ") in 1937.

In 1949 Reimann received the State Prize of the Estonian SSR , in 1951 the State Prize of the USSR and in 1955 the title of "Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR".
