Vincent Joseph Scully (born August 21, 1920 in New Haven, Connecticut , † November 30, 2017 in Lynchburg, Virginia ) was an American art and architecture historian. He was Sterling Professor of Architectural History at Yale University and is considered one of the most important architectural historians of his time.

Life

Scully was born in 1920 as the only child of car dealer Vincent Joseph Scully and soprano Mary Catherine McCormick. He attended Hillhouse High School and then Yale University. In 1940 he successfully completed his bachelor's degree and was hired by the Air Force; but soon he moved to the Marine Corps. In 1946 he began a master's degree in art history with a focus on architecture, which he successfully completed in 1947. In 1949 he received his doctorate. From 1947 he taught at Yale University; at the University of Miami he was also visiting professor. After retiring from Yale University in 1991, he taught until 2009.

Awards and honors

In 1995 the National Endowment for the Humanities dedicated the Jefferson Lecture to Scully ; Scully spoke about "The Architecture of Community". In 1999 the National Building Museum donated the Vincent Scully Prize for exceptional achievements in the fields of architecture, architectural criticism, preservation and urban development. Scully herself was the first to win. In 2003 the Urban Land Institute awarded Scully the J. C. Nichols Prize for visionary urban planning. In 2004, US President George W. Bush awarded Scully the National Medal of Arts . He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1986) and the American Philosophical Society (since 1997).
