Vincenzo Cappelletti

Vincenzo Cappelletti (born August 2, 1930 in Rome ; † May 21, 2020 there ) was an Italian historian of science .

Cappelletti studied medicine and then philosophy, each with a Laureate degree. In 1967 he completed his habilitation in history of science and taught first in Perugia and from 1972 at the University of Rome La Sapienza , from 1980 as a full professor.

From 1992 to 2002 he was vice-president and scientific director of the Enciclopedia Italiana and from 1969 deputy director and 1970 to 1992 director of the associated institute (he had been a member of the staff since 1956, at that time under Aldo Ferrabino ). From 1989 to 1997 he was President of the Académie internationale d'histoire des sciences and in 1988 he became President of the Société Européenne de Culture . From 1999 he was President of the Italian Society for the History of Science (from 2011 Honorary President) and from 1997 to 2010 of the Istituto Accademico di Roma. He has received several honorary doctorates (El Salvador, Buenos Aires) and is a foreign member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences. Cappelletti has twice (1992 and 2001) received the gold medal for services to Italian culture and in 2001 the highest level of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .

From 1970 to 2011 he was president of the Domus Galilaeana in Pisa and from 2001 to 2005 extraordinary commissioner of the Istituto Italiano di Studi Germanici and its president from 2006 to 2011.

He was one of the editors of the scientific history journal Physis and the Archives internationales d'histoire des sciences and since 1956 editor of the journal Il Veltro . He also headed the Studium publishing house and was editor of the magazine of the same name.

He dealt with the history of psychoanalysis ( Sigmund Freud ) and the German scientific history of biology in the 19th century (Vitalism, Emil Du Bois-Reymond , Rudolf Virchow , Hermann von Helmholtz with translation of some of his works into Italian) and, for example, Giovanni Battista Morgagni . He also dealt with the philosophy and sociology of science. As President of the Enciclopedia Italiana, he initiated several important encyclopedia projects, in particular on the history of science.

In 1991 he received the Montaigne Prize and in 2003, as the initiator of the Storia della scienza, the Koyré Medal .
