Vincenzo Pucitta (born 17th February 1778 in Civitavecchia , Papal States , died 20th December 1861 in Milan ) was an Italian opera composer and a representative of the so-called Neapolitan School .

Live and act

Vincenzo Pucitta was accepted into the Conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini in Naples at the age of 12 . There Fedele Fenaroli and Nicola Sala were among his teachers. In 1800 his first opera Le nozze senza sposa was performed at the Teatro Ducale in Parma . After two more operas, he achieved a breakthrough in 1801 with Il furisco at La Scala in Milan , which made him popular. He achieved his greatest success when he met the singer Angelica Catalani , who was very fond of his music. From then on, Pucitta composed numerous works that benefited her vocal possibilities and characteristics. He accompanied the Catalani to London, where he became music director at the King's Theater . A high point of his career was the gala performance of his opera Aristodemo in 1814 in the presence of the English royal couple, the Russian Tsar and the Prussian king. From 1815 to 1817 Pucitta was the piano accompanist of the Catalani when they directed the Théâtre-Italien in Paris . In 1817 there was a dispute with the Catalani husband, which caused Pucitta to return to Italy to settle in Rome. From the time he separated from the singer, his few operas that were still composed no longer had the previous success and before the end of his life his 28 or so works for the stage had been forgotten.
