Life

Scaramuzza was born in Crotone / Italy . He received his first piano lessons from his father Francesco. He gave his first concerts at the age of seven and only a little later studied at the prestigious San Pietro a Maiella Conservatory in Naples . In 1907 he emigrated to Argentina and continued his studies at the “Santa Cecilia” Music Academy in Buenos Aires . He married Sara Bagnati, a fellow student, and founded the Scaramuzza Music Academy with her in 1912. During his career as a pianist, he not only performed in Argentina, but also in North and South America and Europe.

pedagogy

From 1923 Scaramuzza gave up his concert activity and devoted himself to teaching. A large number of renowned Argentine and international pianists came from his school, including Martha Argerich , Michèle Boegner , Bruno Leonardo Gelber , Carmen Piazzini , Daniel Levy , Francisco Amicarelli , Mauricio Kagel , Fausto Zadra , Alberto Portugheis and Enrique Barenboim , the father of Daniel Barenboim . The well-known tango pianists Horacio Salgán and Atilio Stampone were also among his students.

Although Scaramuzza was severely ill in the last few years of his life, he continued to teach by having his grand piano brought to his bedroom. He died in Buenos Aires.

Maria Rosa Oubiña de Castro, a student of Scaramuzza, reconstructed his teaching method on the basis of notes he had made during his life. It was published in book form in 1977 under the title Enseñanzas de un gran maestro .
