Vinciguerria nimbaria is a small deep-sea fish from the luminous fish family(Phosichthyidae) that is widespread in the Atlantic and Pacific. There are records of the species from the western Atlantic near Canada, Florida, Cuba and the Antilles, from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean , from tropical areas of the eastern Atlantic, from the eastern Pacific near California and Chile and from the South China Sea .

Vinciguerria nimbaria is a very small deep-sea fish, usually only 3.7 cm long. It reaches sexual maturity with a length of 3.4 cm, the maximum length determined so far is 4.8 cm. His back is dark, the sides of the body silvery. The top of the pectoral fins and the outer area of ​​the caudal fin are speckled. The dorsal fin is supported by 13 to 15 rays, the anal fin has 13 to 16. The anal fin begins under the middle of the dorsal fin or just behind it. Vinciguerria nimbaria has rows of luminous organs on the abdomen and two below the eye. The luminous organs form at a length of 1.8 to 2 cm.

Way of life

Vinciguerria nimbaria is usually found at depths of 200 to 400 m during the day, but there have also been catches from a depth of 5000 m. The fish rise to depths above 100 m during the night. They feed mainly on copepods .
