The luminous fish (Phosichthyidae) are a family of deep-sea fish that live in the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans . In addition to the bristle- mouthed genus Cyclothone , Vinciguerria is one of the two vertebrate genera in the world with the largest number of individuals.

features

They are 4.5 to 30 centimeters long and usually have the slender body of their relatives, the bristle mouths (Gonostomatidae). There are light organs on the underside of the body . Both young and old animals have well-developed gill traps. Your dorsal fin is supported by 10 to 16, the anal fin by 12 to 33 fin rays. All luminous fish, with the exception of the genus Yarrella , have an adipose fin . A barb on the lower jaw, as it is found in many other mouth spines, is missing in the luminous fish.

Systematics

The luminous fish, which are considered paraphyletic , include 24 species in seven genera .
