Virgil Fleischmann

Virgil Fleischmann OSB (born June 13, 1783 in Braunau am Inn as Joseph Anton Fleischmann ; † May 14, 1863 in Göttweig Abbey ) was an Austrian religious priest , church musician and composer .

Life

Virgil Fleischmann attended the Academic Gymnasium Salzburg and the University of Salzburg . He received his musical training as a chapel boy from Michael Haydn , the brother of Joseph Haydn and Johann Evangelist Haydn .

On October 28, 1804 he joined the Benedictine monastery in Göttweig. He made his religious vows on June 14th, 1807, and celebrated his Primary on September 25th, 1808 ; then he worked as a pastor. He worked as a parish provisional officer in the Furth monastery parish. After his chaplain activity in two other parishes, he was called back to the Göttweig Abbey in 1811 to take over the office of choir regent. After taking office, he expanded the musical repertoire considerably and recorded works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Michael Haydn and wrote the oldest surviving Göttweig music catalog. In 1813 he became Regens Chori .

In 1821 he went to Purk as a pastor in the dean's office in Spitz , where most of his compositions were written. In 1833 and 1844 he took over other collegiate parishes, but spent the last five years of his life in Göttweig again.

Works

  • Virgil Fleischmann composed three masses, including Missa Solemnis in Honorem Beati Altmanni , a requiem and numerous smaller church compositions .
