Virgin Hill

The Virgin Hill ( English for Jungfrauhügel , in Chile Cerro Di Castri ) is a 665  m (according to Chilean information 721  m ) high hill on the West Antarctic James Ross Island . It rises to the west of the Carro Pass .

Scientists on an Argentine Antarctic expedition (1977–1978) named him Cerro Virgen de las Nieves ( Spanish for virgin of the snow hills ). The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated the name into English in 1988 in an abbreviated form. The namesake of the Chilean name is the Italian Francesco Di Castri (1930–2005) from the Universidad de Chile , who examined the mesofauna here during the 22nd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1967–1968) .
