Klaus Stoll

Klaus Stoll (born May 24, 1943 in Rheydt ) is a German double bass player and university professor .

Stoll is the son of the double bass player Karl Stoll and initially received violin lessons until he switched to the double bass at the age of 12. He was tutored by his father and then studied with Heinz Detering in Cologne . As early as 1959, during his studies, he played in the orchestra of the Lower Rhine Symphony Orchestra . In 1965 he became a member of the orchestra of the Berlin Philharmonic, where he was principal bassist from 1992 to 2008.

In addition to his work in the orchestra, Stoll has given concerts as a soloist and chamber musician . He worked regularly with artists such as Emanuel Pahud , András Schiff , Bruno Canino , Rainer Kussmaul , Heinz Holliger , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Thomas Zehetmair and Christiane Jaccottet . He is also a founding member of the Berliner Barock Solisten ensemble .

Stoll played the world premieres of numerous contemporary compositions and released albums and CDs with a wide range of musical repertoire.

He also taught as a professor from 1980 to 2000 at the Berlin University of the Arts , from 1991 to 1998 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and since 1992 at the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as in master classes worldwide.
