Duke of Gordon is a hereditary British title of nobility . It was awarded in the Peerage of Scotland in 1684 , expired in 1836 and was awarded again in 1876, this time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

First award

The title of Duke of Gordon was first bestowed on November 3, 1684 to George Gordon, 4th Marquess of Huntly . The award was made along with the subordinate titles Earl of Huntly and Enzie , Viscount of Inverness and Lord Badenoch, Lochaber, Strathavon, Balmore, Auchindoun, Garthie and Kincardine . He already led the title of Marquess of Huntly , Earl of Enzie and Lord Gordon of Badenoch , created on April 17, 1599 , and the title of Earl of Huntly created in 1445 . All of these titles belong or belonged to the Peerage of Scotland. The 4th Duke was raised on July 2, 1784 in the Peerage of Great Britain to Earl of Norwich , in the County of Norwich , and Baron Gordon of Huntley , in the County of Gloucester , and inherited in 1819 from his grandmother the on 4 Title Baron Mordaunt created May 1529 in the Peerage of England .

Ancestral seat of the Gordons family was Gordon Castle . With the death of the 5th Duke in 1836, the Dukedom and the other titles created in 1684 and 1784 became extinct, the Barony of Mordaunt has since been abeyant , and the Marquessate of Huntly fell on a sideline of the Gordon family.

Second award

On January 13, 1876, the title was recreated in the second bestowal for Charles Gordon-Lennox, 6th Duke of Richmond , nephew of the late 5th Duke of Gordon, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Together with the Dukedom he was awarded the subordinate title of Earl of Kinrara . He already carried the titles Duke of Richmond and Duke of Lennox . The three dukedoms have been united since then.

The Gordon-Lennox family is based in Goodwood House near Chichester in West Sussex .
