Vitaly Margulis

Vitaly Margulis , actually Witalij Iossifowytsch Margulis (born April 16, 1928 in Charkiw , Soviet Union (now Ukraine ); † May 29, 2011 in Los Angeles , USA ) was a Soviet pianist and music teacher .

Margulis received his first piano lessons from his father. He completed his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory as a student of Samari Savchinsky. From 1958 he was the head of his own master class at the Leningrad Conservatory . He was a permanent soloist with the Leningrad Philharmonic and played over 1,000 concerts throughout the Soviet Union .

In 1974 he emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany , where he was appointed professor at the Freiburg University of Music in 1975 . In that year he also resumed his concert activities .

Margulis captured the essence of his piano pedagogy in aphorisms and published it in two books. He also worked as a music teacher. His master class in Freiburg im Breisgau has trained pianists since 1987 in the tradition of the Russian School of the Rubinstein Brothers . In 1994, he received a call to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
