The bird park on the crater , also called the crater zoo or the small zoo on the crater , near Bad Nenndorf was a privately operated and publicly accessible park. It was one hectare in size and had 500 animals. The park was located near a water source surrounded by a calcareous sinter ring wall, known locally as a crater. The crater area is west of Bad Nenndorf and south of the federal highway 65 on the watercourse of the Rodenberger Aue . The zoo, founded in 1963, was closed in October 2015.

Bird park

Local and exotic birds were shown in around 50 aviaries . Some tame and trusting animals roamed freely on the property. Chickens, ducks, geese, owls, birds of prey, ravens, pheasants, storks, herons, peacocks, cranes, parakeets, parrots, beos and many wild songbirds lived here as guests. There were also some petting animals such as goats, sheep and rabbits.

Werner Schulz from Bad Nenndorf and his wife Lenchen fulfilled a childhood dream when, in 1963, he leased the overgrown area behind the crater from a farmer and started building the bird park. He built the park himself. This also includes the care of orphaned and found birds and the care of wild host animals. Since 1993, the work has been supported by the Bird Park Friends Association at Bad Nenndorf Crater eV with around 100 members. In this way, many aviaries could be renewed and information boards put up. After Werner Schulz's death on July 4, 2009, his family continued to run the park until operations were closed in October 2015.

"Krater" natural monument

Crater pond with calcareous sinter ring wall
Spring well at the crater

The incorrect name “ crater ” is based on the visual impression that the tufa-like ring wall at the source pond makes on the viewer. Here, water saturated with lime meets an impermeable layer of clay and so the rainwater that flows off the Deister has been pushing to the surface for thousands of years . As soon as the water comes into contact with air, it separates lime, which is deposited on the edge of the pond. This creates the impression of a volcanic crater .

This unique geological formation and a neighboring spring well have been a natural monument for hikers and spa guests for many decades. Hermann Löns already described the creation of the "Krater am Galgenbrink" with the words: "Not Vulkan but Neptune was its creator."

After the over 5 m high ring wall prevented the approx. 20 m wide spring pond from flowing out, the spring well was built a few meters east. Around 170,000 liters of spring water flow from today's spring at the fountain into the Rodenberger Aue, which is only 400 m away.
As early as the 19th century, the preserving effect of the low-oxygen lime water gave guests the idea of sinking flower arrangements in the spring fountain, which would keep their fresh appearance for months; Numerous coins were also left by spa guests as obolus to the gods in the hope of speedy recovery.
