Vogelsburger Pforte is one of the most famous and smallest vineyards in the Franconian growing region . It is located in the corridors of the Volkach district of Vogelsburg .

Geographical location and geology

The vineyards of the "gate" are located around the former monastery of the Vogelsburg on the so-called Escherndorfer Berg or Vogelsberg. In the north they are bounded by the state road St 2260, further north is the Mainhang an der Vogelsburg nature reserve . The district of Astheim begins further to the east with the vineyards of the Astheim Carthusian monastery . The vines of the Escherndorfer Lumps stretch to the south . The Vogelsburger Pforte is free of large areas, but at the same time part of the Volkacher Mainschleife area .

The vineyard area has consistently been around 2 hectares since the 1970s. This makes the Vogelsburger Pforte the smallest vineyard on the Volkacher Mainschleife . The vineyard faces south or south-east. In contrast to the steep Escherndorf locations in the area, the “gate” only has a slope of 30 to 40%. The vines were planted on limestone marl and loess loam . Only Silvaner is grown here.

history

The Vogelsburg was one of the focal points of Franconian viticulture in the early Middle Ages . In the 7th century, the grapevine came to Franconia in the course of Christianization , and by 900 at the latest it also reached the Main Loop. The Vogelsburg , already established as a prehistoric and early historical fortification, rose to become an administrative center of the advancing Franconia. "Campis vinetis" (vineyards) are already mentioned in the document that was first mentioned in 906.

Thanks to the support of the large monasteries in the area, Franconia rose to become one of the largest wine-growing regions in the course of the Middle Ages. This cultural landscape around the Vogelsburg, created by viticulture, persuaded Hermann I zu Castell to set up a monastery on the mountain in 1282. The Carmelites moved into the complex, which they called "Mons Dei" (mountain of God) from now on. In the German Peasants' War the monastery was looted in 1525 and the monks could no longer cultivate the area.

The final collapse of the medieval wine industry on the Mainschleife did not come until the secularization at the beginning of the 19th century. The monasteries were no longer used as sales markets, and at the same time poor vineyards had been opened up. Instead, fruit trees were planted. In the second half of the 19th century, the Vogelsburg became a tourist destination . At that time, wine was only grown there for serving purposes.

Viticulture on a larger scale did not start again until the 1970s. The wine was sold under the name "Vogelsburger Pforte", which is an allusion to the location of the Vogelsburg as the "eye of the needle" above Volkachs. In the meantime the Würzburg Augustine Sisters were tenants of the facility and only marketed the wine in the monastery inn. The Vogelsburger Pforte was handed over to the Würzburg Juliusspital on January 1st, 2010 .

winery

Today Vogelsburg wine is grown exclusively by the Juliusspital winery in Würzburg. The Schlossberg was classified as the first location by the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries .
