The Landsknecht vineyard north of Obervolkach

Obervolkacher Landsknecht (also Rimbacher Landsknecht ) is one of the most famous vineyards in the Franconian growing region . It is located in the districts of the Volkach districts of Obervolkach and Rimbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The oldest vineyard in Franconia can be found here.

Geographical location and geology

The vineyard stretches along a strip north of the village of Obervolkach, ends in the northeast at the Obervolkach-Rimbach boundary and in the north at the ruins of the Stettenburg on the mountain of the same name ( 49 ° 52 ′ 40.7 ″  N , 10 ° 15 ′ 38, 7 ″  O ). The vineyards are only interrupted by the Volkach valley . The Rimbacher section is much smaller and extends to the north of the village ( 49 ° 52 ′ 19.7 ″  N , 10 ° 17 ′ 22.2 ″  E ). The "mercenary" is a little out of Maine , but is still part of the Großlage Volkacher Kirchberg in area Volkacher Mainschleife .

The vines grow on shell limestone soils with a Lettenkeup layer . In Rimbach, a thin layer of humus was built up through decades of humus supply . The Obervolkach section covers an area of 76 hectares , while in the Rimbach district there are only 3 hectares of vineyards. In Rimbach the slope covered with vines has a slope of 10 percent, in Obervolkach the vines grow on much steeper slopes.

History of viticulture

Viticulture in Obervolkach has a long tradition. Vineyards are already mentioned in the document that first mentioned the village in 906. In the Middle Ages a long strip of vineyards stretched between Fahr and Obervolkach; these vineyards were called "Huswerth". In addition to arable land, every inhabitant of the village owned vineyards. In most cases, so-called Weingülte , medieval taxes, had to be paid to the village lords.

After the dissolution of the Würzburg monastery , which had ensured the sale of wine from Obervolkach for centuries, there was a major crisis in viticulture at the beginning of the 19th century. In addition to the political changes, beer also began its triumphal march in Main Franconia , and high tariffs were levied on wine exports. In 1830 Obervolkach still had 68 hectares of vineyards, in 1940 there were 11 hectares left.

Although viticulture played a rather subordinate role in Rimbach, the oldest vineyard in Franconia can be found there. It is the so-called old sentence in the hallway "Zum Brücklein". The vineyard has existed since 1835 and the fourth generation of the Hufnagel family has grown wine there. The mountain, as the only one in the area, remained untouched by the land consolidation and has a large number of varieties .

In the course of the land consolidation, the vineyards had to be merged into individual layers. In the implementation of the Wine Act of 1971, all locations were combined into the single location "Landsknecht". Originally there were seven vineyards in Obervolkach, namely the vineyards "Geißberg", "Am Gries", "Buchhorn", "Sonnenberg", "An der Steig", "Am Heiß Stein" and "Neuer Berg". By merging the vineyards, viticulture in Obervolkach gained in importance.

The origin of the location name is unclear, the "Landsknecht" appeared as a location for the first time in the original cadastre of the 19th century. The Obervolkach location was probably named after the foreign soldiers who stayed in Obervolkach during the German Peasant War . Today the Landsknecht , embodied by an actor, has risen to become the most important symbolic figure of Obervolkach. Together with the Volkacher councilor and the Astheimer Karthäuser he represents the Mainschleife wine.
