Gaibacher Schlosspark (also Schloßpark ) is a vineyard in the Franconian region . It is located in the Volkach district of Gaibach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen.

Geographical location and geology

The vineyard is in the middle of the Gaibach Castle Park on the slopes of the so-called Sonnenberg below the constitutional column . The hall of the Volkach district of Öttershausen begins in the north . To the northeast is the Fasangarten natural monument in the former park. The east is occupied by the Kreuzkapelle . There the state road 2271 runs past the vineyard some distance away. The Gaibacher Schlosspark is a large area free, but part of the Volkacher Mainschleife area .

Today the site covers an area of about 6 hectares . At the beginning of the 1980s, only 1.6 hectares were planted with vines, the area increased further into the 2000s, so in 2004 a total of 12 hectares were planted. The vines face south and were built on slopes with a 5 to 20% gradient. They grow on soils of the Upper Muschelkalk and the Lettenkeuper . Grapes of the Silvaner and Traminer varieties grow there .

history

Gaibach was not a typical wine-growing community in the past. However, the inhabitants of the place mainly operated viticulture as a sideline for their own needs. In 1780, 78 acres of the Gaibach district were still planted with vines. About a quarter of this area was in the hands of the village lords, the Counts of Schönborn . The general development of Franconian viticulture at the beginning of the 19th century also led to a gradual decline in Gaibach.

Because of the mediatization of the count's possessions, a large wine buyer fell away. At the same time, beer rose to become the most important luxury item on the Mainschleife. With the emergence of phylloxera, viticulture in Gaibach almost completely collapsed. In the 19th century, the Gaibach castle park was converted into an English garden . It was not until the 1980s that the Counts of Schönborn , who owned the area on the mountain, began to grow wine there.

winery

The location is managed exclusively by the Graf von Schönborn winery , which is based in the nearby estate on Hallburg , which also belongs to Volkach .
