The palace park with the constitution column

The Gaibach Castle Park is a listed garden in Gaibach, Lower Franconia . The history of the palace park reflects the great garden fashions of the past 350 years. It is located in the north of the village of Gaibach, framed by the state road 2271 and the district road KT 35.

history

The history of the palace park is closely linked to the rule of the Counts of Schönborn. Philipp Erwein von Schönborn acquired the village in the middle of the 17th century and handed over the rule to his son Lothar Franz in 1668 . The church man planned to rebuild the early modern palace and equip it with a representative baroque garden. For this purpose, the area in the west of the moated castle was leveled.

In total, the later baroque garden should have a length of 300 m and a width of about 100 m. The facility grew slowly according to the ideas of Lothar Franz von Schönborn. First a garden pavilion was built, followed by a greenhouse, the so-called orangery in the far west of the complex. The triton fountain and a grotto were built in the main axis . A pheasantry was laid out in the north of the baroque garden .

The garden was completed in 1712. The complex was one of the first baroque gardens in southern Germany . This pioneering role subsequently led to frequent mentions of the garden. Nikolaus Person had already made an engraving of the planned palace park in 1697 . In the same year a poem on the garden was published. In 1712 the now completed garden was again sealed. In 1728 Salomon Kleiner published a series of engravings about the castles of the Counts of Schönborn.

The poem from 1697 lists the planned statues that would later adorn the garden. Greek mythology in particular was represented by Neptune , Minerva , Juno , Perseus, Hercules , Paris, Faunus, Ceres, Pan and Flora , among others . The aromatic plants in the garden were also listed: roses, lilies, carnations, hyacinths , daffodils, marigolds, hogweed , male loyalty , cinnamon, mint and lavender.

After the Grafschaft Wiesentheid , to which Gaibach had belonged, was dissolved at the beginning of the 19th century and the Counts of Schönborn no longer had authority over their subjects, Franz Erwein von Schönborn-Wiesentheid had the baroque palace park dissolved. Between 1800 and 1830 it was converted into an English landscape park, previously the park area had been expanded to almost 100 hectares. The center of the complex was now the constitutional column, inaugurated in 1828.

Current condition

The area of the former baroque garden is built over today. For the Franken-Landschulheim Schloss Gaibach , the school sports field was set up on the site of the facility. The main features of the larger landscape park can still be recognized. Today, the center of the facility is a large, almost circular area that is used for agriculture. The former pheasant garden in the north of the garden is still criss-crossed by the hunting trails.
