Philipp Erwein von Schönborn

Philipp Erwein von Schönborn zu Freienfels-Eschbach (* 1607 ; † November 4, 1668 ) was the son of Friedrich Georg von Schönborn († 1640 in Cologne as cathedral cantor ) and Maria Barbara von der Leyen . He is considered to be the founder of the economic success of the Counts of Schönborn .

His brother was the Archbishop of Mainz, Johann Philipp von Schönborn , who appointed him as Oberamtmann of the Electorate of Mainz in Steinheim, for the inheritance of the Archbishopric of Mainz and for the inheritance of the Bishopric of Würzburg . Emperor Leopold I granted him and all his descendants the title of noble standard lord and made him free from the empire. At the same time he was given the great palatinate and extensive privileges. He also carried the titles of the Reichshof Council and the Electoral Mainz Privy Council .

In 1650 he acquired the town of Gaibach, including the right of patronage over the parish church there.

Schönborn Castle in Heusenstamm

Until 1662 he had the task of providing the burgrave at Frauenstein Castle . On August 30, 1661, Philipp Erwein received the feudal deed over the neck court and blood spell in Heusenstamm from Emperor Leopold. There he built Schönborn Castle in front of the moated castle of the former Lords of Heusenstamm between 1663 and 1668 . He also acquired land and goods on both sides of the Rhine, on the Main, in the Taunus and the Wetterau, through inheritance, purchase and fiefdom.

He was with Maria Ursula, geb. Greiffenclau -Vollraths married. One of his 12 children who emerged from this marriage was the later Archbishop of Mainz, Lothar Franz von Schönborn . Another son was Melchior Friedrich Graf von Schönborn-Buchheim . Philipp Erwein's successor was his son Johann Erwein , who was only 14 years old at the time of his death . His tomb in the parish church of Geisenheim was probably created by Mathias Rauchmiller .
