Part of the large area: The Volkacher Ratsherr vineyard on the Kirchberg, which gives it its name

Volkacher Kirchberg is a large location in the Franconian wine-growing region . It is the largest site in the entire cultivation area and includes vineyards in the districts of Kitzingen , Schweinfurt and Würzburg in Lower Franconia. The large location is part of the Volkacher Mainschleife area .

Geographical location and geology

The vineyards of the Volkacher Kirchberg stretch along some mountains in the north of the Kitzingen district, in the southeast of the Schweinfurt district and the eastern district of Würzburg in the former main triangle of the Franconian cultivation area. Originally, these areas were part of the Gerolzhofen district , which was dissolved in 1972. The center of the large location is the Volkacher Mainschleife and the so-called Weininsel , where the Nordheimer and Sommeracher vineyards, the largest in the area, can be found.

Overall, the large area covers an area of around 1,685 ha , making it the largest large area in Franconia . Naturally, the Volkacher Kirchberg lies on the soils of the Middle Main Valley . The vines grow in the central area around the Main loop on rocks of the Upper Muschelkalks and the Lettenkeupers . In the areas further away from the Main in the east of the large area, loess loam and drifting sand also form the subsoil. In addition to the Silvaner variety, many other varieties are grown there.

Origin of name

The 230 m high Volkacher Kirchberg already formed a religious center for the surrounding villages in the Middle Ages . This is where the so-called original parish church was to be found, which was the pastoral center of the area. A pilgrimage to the Kirchberg was later established . At the same time, viticulture began on the mountain, so the church on the mountain was called Maria im Weingarten . With the rise of tourism, the church developed into the landmark of the Mainschleife.

In 1971 a new wine law came into force as part of the land consolidation . It obliged the communities to combine their vineyards in order to improve marketing. At the same time, the newly created locations often had to be assigned a large location. This was to ensure that inferior sites could also be sold under a well-known name. The wine-growing communities on the Mainschleife then chose the name Kirchberg.

Vineyards

The list of vineyards is based on a list of all Bavarian vineyards, which was published by the government of Lower Franconia . It is arranged alphabetically. In the second column are districts noted on which the vineyard is to be found. The areas of the vineyards are also listed. The nature of the soil and its predominant composition can be seen in the geology column. Notes contain important historical key points on the individual locations.

The Volkacher Kirchberg has a total of 23 individual layers. Many locations stretch over several districts, with the vines often concentrating on one district (example Volkacher and Driver Ratsherr). The Sommeracher locations are special because they were partially assigned to the Sommeracher Engelsberg area at the same time . The geographic coordinates refer to the largest sub-area of the respective location.
